Duplicated Transactions from CSV upload

Edited

Duplicate entries can be a hassle, but with a little knowledge, you can easily prevent and fix them.

Common Causes of Duplicate Transactions

1. Overlapping Date Ranges

The most frequent cause of duplicate transactions is importing data from overlapping date ranges. For example:

First import: January 1-31

Second import: January 15 - February 28

This results in transactions from January 15-31 appearing twice in your records.

When importing your CSV file, make sure you check what dates your previous upload covered, to ensure you are not uploading the same data again.

2. Mixing Bank Sync and CSV Import

If you have a bank account connected and are also importing CSV files from the same account, you may end up with duplicates. It’s best to stick to one method to avoid confusion.

3. Importing the Same File Twice

Accidentally uploading the same CSV file more than once can lead to duplicate entries. Always double-check your files before importing!

Pro Tip

When importing CSV files regularly (like monthly Amex statements), keep a spreadsheet noting:

  • Date of import: When you imported the file.

  • Date range imported: For example, 1 Feb - 28 Feb.

  • File name: The name of the CSV file you imported.

This practice will help you avoid overlapping imports in the future!

By following these guidelines, you can keep your transaction records clean and organized. Happy bookkeeping!
