Splitting a Transaction
Sometimes, a single transaction may involve multiple categories. Splitting transactions allows you to track your expenses more accurately and helps you maintain a well-organized budget. For example, if you shop at Ikea, you might purchase furniture and also stock up on frozen meatballs in the same transaction. In this case, you would want to categorize the furniture as a home expense and the meatballs as a grocery expense.
Steps to Split a Transaction
Follow these easy steps to split a transaction in Billroo:
On the Mobile App:
Click on the transaction you wish to split.
Select Edit Transaction at the bottom of the screen.
Select Split Transaction underneath the category.
You can choose to click "Split Evenly" to divide the transaction into two equal amounts, or you can manually enter the amounts for each category.
If you need to split the transaction into more than two categories, simply click "+ Add Split" at the bottom to add another split.
Once you have allocated the amounts to the desired categories, click Apply Split to finalize your changes.
On the Desktop/Web App:
Click on the three dots next to the transaction you wish to split.
Select Split Transaction from the dropdown menu.
What Happens After Splitting?
After you click "Apply Split," separate transactions will appear in your Transaction screen for each category/amount you've assigned.
You will notice a split icon appearing in the transaction description field for each of the transactions that have been split. This icon serves as a reminder that the transaction has been split. It’s a handy feature that helps you keep track of your expenses, especially when comparing your Billroo transactions to your bank statement.
Can I Get my Original Transaction Back Instead?
You can't undo / merge a split transaction once you have split it. However, if you decide you no longer want it split, you can manually delete one of the split transactions and edit the other to update the $ value to the total amount of the original transaction instead. As always, when manually editing transactions, take care to ensure you keep the total amount accurate to ensure accurate expense and budget data.
