Creating Subcategories

Edited

You can use subcategories to group categories together underneath a specific parent category.

For example, you might have a Category called "Utilities" with the sub-categories of "Electricity", "Water" and "Internet".

💡 Tip: You can create subcategories for any part of your budget, not just expenses. You can use subcategories to group Income, Savings and Investment categories too!

There are multiple ways you can create a subcategory.

On the App:

In the Budget tab, press the + sign at the bottom of the relevant budget screen e.g. Income, Expense, Savings etc. Enter the name you want to call the subcategory, the duration (note: this must match the parent category) and the budget amount. You can now toggle the button next to "Subcategory", and this will bring up the option to select a Parent Category to put this new subcategory under.

OR

In your budget tab, click on the Category you wish to add a subcategory to. Scroll down to Subcategories and press the +Add sign to create a new subcategory. Once created, you can also drag and drop the subcategories into an order of your choosing.

On the Desktop/computer: Scroll to the section of your Budget you wish to add a subcategory to (e.g. Income, Expenses, Savings).

Hover your mouse over the category name and a + sign will appear in the box, press this button OR Scroll to the bottom of that budget section and select the + Add Subcategory button below.

You will need to select a parent Category for the subcategory to appear under. Once created, you can drag and drop the subcategories into an order of your choosing.

When categorizing/recategorizing transactions:

On your transaction screen, if the subcategory you want to assign doesn't yet exist, you can set this up without having to go to your Budget to do so. Simply select "Add New Category" from the list, and enter the details as per the above. Toggle "Subcategory" for the option to select a Parent category.

About Subcategories:

  • If the total combined value of the subcategories is a greater $ value than the overall category, the system will prompt you to increase the Category budget to match.

  • On the Overview screen you'll be able to see both the overall Category budget and actuals, as well as budget and actual for each subcategory.

  • Please note that you cannot nest subcategories underneath other subcategories. You can have multiple subcategories underneath one Parent category.

  • See the video from Queenie below demonstrating some of the ways you can create and manage subcategories on the website:

Using Tags for Better Organization

In addition to custom categories, you can utilize the tagging function to group specific transactions together. This allows you to keep each transaction in its specific category while still being able to track related transactions easily.
